District Smoke House
In the RFSA Grant Scheme, 2015, Bega Valley District was fortunate to secure a grant which allowed the building of a portable smoke house and associated trailer.
Previous to this, Brigades had to either travel to the Mogo Hot Fire centre or use a caravan to practise hydraulic venting. The former meant, for some Brigades, travel time of about three hours one way; the later meant the use of a caravan that was slowly falling apart.
The procurement of the smoke house could not have come at a better time.
The smoke house itself is constructed from 2 mm checker-plate aluminium; having 4 walls, roof, 1 x door, 2 x windows. The dimensions being 3m x 3m x 2m. Each wall consists of 1.5 m x 2 m panels which interlock together. The roof is made from 2 panels 3m x 3m.
The smoke house was built by a local metal and welding company, Sapphire Welding & Fabrication Pty Ltd
This means the whole smoke house can be put together by at least two persons although the old adage applies here - “Many hands make light work”.
The smoke machine has been provided by Smoke Shield Australia - Fire Trainer 101 Kit.
The portability means that any Brigade can book the Smoke House and install it locally for training.
Again, Bega District Brigades thank the RFSA, as without their assistance and support this training facility would not be possible.
