Revision Exercises II

Personnel Required

  • 1 - 2 crew

Equipment required

  • 1:25000 topographic map
  • Bega Map magnetic
  • Compass

Adapted from and many thanks to: Alan Burdon - Cobargo Brigade

You are in the Bega area but uncertain of your exact position. You observe three prominent points that you can find on the map and take magnetic compass bearings on each:

  • Point 1: Radio tower south of Bega (GR 520334) MB 236°
  • Point 2: Bega Valley Lookout (GR 524408) MB 320°
  • Point 3: Dr George transmission towers (GR 597389) MB 211°

Locate these points.

From the bearings given, calculate a back-bearing (+/- 180°)

  • Remember: the sum of the first two digits of the bearing should equal the sum of the first two digits of the back bearing. The last digits should be the same.
  • Draw the grid back bearing traces onto your map. The lines should roughly intersect.
  • From the intersection triangle identify where you are and give a map reference:

  • Location: = ———————————
  • Reference: = ——————————

Route Planning and Grid Reference Exercise

a) An observer at 597389 sees smoke on a grid bearing of 173°

  • Identify the location of the observer and draw in the bearing trace.

b) An observer at 540305 sees smoke on a grid bearing of 63°

  • Identify the location of the observer and draw in the bearing trace.

c) An observer at 669313 sees smoke on a grid bearing of 290°

  • Identify the location of the observer and draw in the bearing trace. Identify the likely grid reference of the fire.——————————

d) From the Tathra Station describe a route to the closest approach point to the fire. Identify approximate direction of travel, significant way points with grid references, distances and names of roads followed when possible.
