Rural Fire Driving (RFD)

Rural Fire Driving (RFD) is an internal RFS, specialist program for members who drive RFS vehicles under operational conditions. It is aligned with a national unit of competency. It is designed to take a member with an appropriate driver’s licence, Bush Firefighter (BF) or Bush Fire Support (BFS) certification, and give them operational driving competency

Target Group

The Rural Fire Driving (RFD) program is targeted at members with an appropriate driver’s licence, and Bush Firefighter (BF) or Bush Fire Support (BFS) certification, or higher. The intention is that a sufficient number of RFD qualified firefighters will exist within a brigade to reasonably ensure all brigade vehicles can be driven by them.

RFS Entry Requirements

Before commencing training or assessment in RFD, a member must:

  • Be able to understand, speak, read and write the English language sufficiently well to communicate effectively with other members in a team.
  • Comply with road regulations and signs, and operate a vehicle under operational firefighting or similar conditions.
  • Possess a “full” driver’s licence appropriate to the type of vehicle being driven. Most, but not all, tankers require an MR type licence. Holders of provisional driver’s licences of any type should not drive RFS vehicles under operational conditions.
  • Be certified as competent in Basic Firefighter (BF) or Bush Fire Support (BFS) or its equivalent. Note: Most members seeking RFD certification do so in order to drive and operate firefighting appliances on the fire ground. In such cases they should be encouraged (but are not required) to complete the AFT component of the Advanced Firefighter (AF) program, or equivalent.

This is because the subjects covered in AFT, (namely equipment maintenance, operation of pumps and navigation) provide skills that are also often relevant to operating firefighting appliances on the fire ground.

Competencies.

The following unit of competency is aligned with this program align:

  • PUAVEH001B - Drive vehicles under operational conditions. There are no national prerequisites or co-requisites specified for the unit of competency.
